Bingo and Oklahoma: 2 birds of a feather

Oklahoma has long been synonymous with Bingo. That’s due to the fact that the Native tribes of Oklahoma have run Bingo sessions for decades. Clients from each of the neighboring states load up in autos and travel to Oklahoma to wager on Bingo for the weekends.

The 1988 IGRA was introduced after a precedent setting determination by The U.S. Supreme Court the year prior. From that time, twenty three of the 39 Indian bands of Oklahoma have opened gambling halls. The Chickasaw were the 1st Oklahoma Native tribes to take advantage of the gaming rules, and today run ten casinos of their own. Bingo was the game on which the above-mentioned gambling dens were built on. Electronic games like slot machines weren’t allowed, since they’re believed to lead to gambling dependency at a higher rate than bingo.

In recent years, Oklahoma rules have altered to permit large Native gaming casinos. You will now see Indian gambling dens with one armed bandits, video poker and chemin de fer tables. Craps and roulette are still not legal in the Amerindian gambling halls yet, but this is only a waiting game. Nobody can determine what having other casino games in the bingo parlors will do for the appeal of bingo.
